Session 24: Mothers and Mummies

In the illusionary darkness the sounds of Krius struggling against the crushing grip of the death snake could be heard. Gasping and cursing as his armor strained to protect him he made another smiting attack at the reptile. His sword struck true but the powerful snake held him fast.

Meanwhile his friends continued in their attempts to help. Alton estimated the center of the cloud and summoned a swarm of magical blades that cut and slashed at the snake forcing it to move. Elarios let fly a pair of arrows into the darkness, elven senses keen, both arrows hit their mark narrowly missing the paladin, yet the snake fought on.

As the snake constricted Krius again he could tell it was weakening, but would his friend be able to kill the foul beast before he was crushed to death? Mannon and Prophit let loose another barrage of attacks, snake guts and ichor spilled over the paladins already grimy armor.

???who killed the snake???

The monster defeted, its magical darkness lifted. Krius' trusty lantern and the groups other light sources illuminated gruesome coils of dead snake and in its midst Krius emerged, coated with gruesome gore.

Winded and wounded after the fight the group decided to rest and tend to wounds. As Krius cleaned his armor of gore, Mannon decided he waned to some snake skin to make a pair of nice boots with and discussed methods of skinning the reptile with Elarios. Meanwhile, even bolder plans for the snake's head were made as Alton began preparing a ritual.

All the while the group was tending to wounds and making plans for the snake carcase the insistent beating of the drum in the adjacent room continued, an investigation was in order!

Krius crept forward and gently pushed aside the reed mat that separated the tunnels from the room that held the mysterious drummer. He peered into the room. It was a large chamber strewn with heaps of garbage and two broken apart sarcophagi. Small holes lined the walls of the chamber, perhaps some kind of trap. In the center of the room on top of a pile of disgusting lizardfolk rubbish a scrawny lizard man beat a large kettle drum. He noticed Krius, let out a yelp and ran for more caverns located across the way.

Ever in the pursuit of evil, Krius chaged across the hall following the fleeing lizardman and soon found himself amidst dozens of large eggs, lizardmen whelps, and their brood mothers, large lizardfolk females, who were guarding the young hatchings. Prophit, Mannon, and Elarios soon followed while Alton positioned himself in out of the inevitable melee, the better to barrage the enemy with his array of magical attacks.

Shields, swords, and spell were drawn as the lizard whelps let loose a barrage of heavy stones. Alton muttered an incantation with his sultry drow voice causing an ice storm to fill the area where the lizard creatures were concentrated slaying many of the young. When the snow and ice cleared melee erupted with Mannon, Krius, Elarios, and Prophit concentrating their attacks on the vicious brood mothers.

As Alton stood in the hall a barrage of poisoned durts shot out from the walls, a trap! He fired off one last spell and ran for cover in an alcoved chamber. Prophit seeing Alton in trouble ran off to assist. They both found themselves in a small chamber with a stone sarcophagi. No sooner had the secured cover from the barrage of poisoned dart than the lid of the sarcophagi opened revealing a horrific mummy! It lumbered upright and began flailing wildly in a mad attack against the wizard and cleric.

Meanwhile, back in the nest chamber, sword, arrow, and warlock curse were taking their toll on the brood of lizard hatchings and their protectors. A few still stood but Krius, Mannon, and Elarios were taking them down one by one.

Knowing that his friends were battling the lizard brood and that help may be a long time in showing, Prophit pulled out his holy symbol and invoked holy power to root the mummy in place, as he did Alton covered it in magical drow showdow.

One brood mother lizardfolk remained, Krius and Mannon had it surrounded as they were preparing to off the foul creature a retinue of five new lizardmen arrived on the scene. Of the five one stood out starkly against the rest. He was atired in rune inscribed bones, his old scales almost white with age, he wore an elaborate head dress and had a golden demonic skull (a replica of the very skull the hero's were seeking) attached to his belt. The others in the group consisted of two obvious body guards, a cowardly one hiding behind the others, and a mysterious silent lizardman completely encased in a suit of full plate armor. The lizardman witch doctor glared at the heroes, malice in his eyes...
